ServiceNOW Domain Separation

Find out how the ServiceNow Sub-Tenant Platform Architecture, also known as Domain Separation, partnered with Mobiz, can be a game changer for your organization!

What is Domain Separation and how can it help my business?

The ServiceNow Sub-Tenant Platform Architecture, also known as Domain Separation, allows application data, processes, and administrative tasks to be separated into logical groupings called domains.

Domain Separation is used by customers who:

  • Need to enforce absolute data segregation between business entities (data separation) but require centralized management of ServiceNow.
  • Customize business process definitions and user interfaces for each domain (delegated administration).
  • Maintain global processes and global reporting in a single instance.
  • Have minor or moderate process differences between business entitles.

The owner of the ServiceNow instance is called the provider. Organizations that use the instance are tenants. Each tenant has its own domain in a domain-separated instance.

Managed Service Providers (MSPs) use Domain Separation to keep customer data and processes separate on a shared ServiceNow instance. The MSP manages the instance and the environment for its customers, and each customer’s data is separated into its own domain so one customer’s data is not visible to another customer.

Is it right for my Business?

Not all data segregation use cases require Domain Separation. Domain Separation is designed for use in environments where multiple tenants require data and process segregation, but the entire environment is managed by a single group.  If you are unsure of whether you can benefit from Domain Separation, contact one of our experts to learn more.

If the answer to any of these questions is no, a single instance should be used instead of Domain Separation.

  • Logical data separation: Can your business use logical data separation instead of physical data separation?
  • Scale: Is your business small enough to not require multiple nodes and/or dedicated hardware?
  • Platform requirements: Can your business work with the products and services provided on the shared platform?
  • Process differences: Do your business processes require less than five percent of change from shared processes?
  • Administration requirements: Does the instance owner administer the instance with the customer only managing limited configuration?

Benefits of Domain Separation

Domain Separation provides benefits for both providers and tenants:

  • Volume licensing
  • Centralized administration of customers as tenants
  • Data segregation
  • Global reporting
  • Upgradability and scalability

  • Lower minimum license threshold
  • Pre-built processes and capabilities
  • Reduced staff requirements
  • Faster on-boarding
  • Shared instance costs
  • Services offered by the provider
